In the past week three colleges from around the country have faced social media threats, which is very alarming and highlights an enormous problem. Since social media threats started rearing their ugly heads back in 2012, more and more schools are facing threats voiced on Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks on a regular basis. Something has to be done.
In this recent wave of digital violence the three victims were the following universities:
1) University of Alabama
2) University of Georgia
3) University of Southern Mississippi
The reality is that there’s only so much we can do to prevent social media threats from occurring, and what’s more important is to proactively identify threatening messages before harm can be done. Students must take part in this process by being vigilant and reporting questionable posts they come across.
Additionally, schools should enlist the help of a social media threat assessment company with the knowledge, experience, and ability to detect potential threats and keep students safe.
